Is the Apple Watch Ultra Worth It If You Do Not Hike, Dive or Run Marathons?

Apple Watch Ultra 4 can still be worth buying if you never hike, dive or run a marathon, but only for a narrower set of everyday benefits. Its long battery life, large bright display and titanium case are genuinely useful, although Apple Watch Series 12 provides the same main health sensors and costs $400 less.

Apple sells Ultra 4 from $799 with GPS and cellular connectivity in every model. Apple rates it for up to 50 hours of normal use and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode, compared with 24 and 38 hours for Series 12. That difference can turn daily charging into charging every second day, depending on workouts, cellular use and sleep tracking.

The 3,000-nit display is another practical advantage in bright sunlight, and the flat sapphire crystal should resist scratches better than the glass on an aluminum Series 12. Ultra 4 also includes a loud siren, an Action button, satellite communications and dual-frequency GPS. However, it weighs about 63 grams before the band and uses a single 49mm case, so the fit can feel excessive on smaller wrists.

Battery and design are the real reasons to upgrade

Health tracking alone does not make Ultra 4 a better purchase. Both watches use the S11 chip and Health Sensing System, with the Readiness score, Recovery HRV, ECG, sleep tracking and hypertension notifications listed for each. The extra money mainly pays for endurance, materials and specialist outdoor hardware, as our wrist size and battery comparison also shows.

An ordinary user may still value the Ultra if charging anxiety is a constant problem, the larger screen is easier to read or the rugged design suits work and travel. Buyers who want titanium should also compare it with a titanium Series 12, because the price gap becomes smaller than the headline comparison between Ultra 4 and the entry aluminum model.

Most people who exercise for an hour a day, charge regularly and prefer a lighter watch should buy Series 12. Choose Ultra 4 when its battery or physical design improves something you do every week, rather than buying it for health features that the less expensive watch already includes.
